Teeth Whitening 101: What Are the Best Teeth Whitening Systems?

Best Teeth Whitening Systems

Like a sparkling personality, white teeth are attractive. Women and men find a bright sparkling smile highly appealing. In fact, one study has found that job applicants with white teeth have better chances of getting hired than those with yellow or stained teeth.

There are different whitening measures that people can employ, from whitening toothpastes and rinses, to bleaching strips that you can buy over the counter, as well as dental office laser whitening procedures.

But what are the best solutions for teeth whitening?

Nearly all teeth whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide. The difference is in their concentration. Whitening toothpastes are the cheapest options but they also have the least amount of hydrogen peroxide (about 1%) which means that only the surface of the teeth is lightened, but not the enamel. It may be able to remove blemishes on the teeth surface but if they are seriously stained, then you need a more potent solution.

Over-the-counter strips and gels have more hydrogen-peroxide than toothpastes. Experts put the concentration at 6-10%. At this concentration, the product may be able to work on the fissures and holes of the enamel to remove stains. However, it may not be able to completely whiten the teeth especially for those with stubborn stains.

And so we come to laser whitening. This is an in-office teeth whitening procedure that can significantly brighten your smile. The procedure only takes about an hour and when it’s done, your teeth will be several shades lighter.

Chairside whitening is effective in removing discolorations or stains caused by:

  • Tobacco use
  • Consumption of certain food and drinks like coffee, soda, tea and red wine.
  • Aging

It’s important to note, however, that there are some stains that even in-office teeth whitening won’t be able to fix. If the discoloration is caused by trauma or intake of certain medicines, we won’t recommend teeth whitening.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t have a better-looking smile. We can recommend other options like Lumineers which can make your teeth whiter and brighter by covering the stains.
